Do you look on line at photos taken by the pro's?

Is it to see how good or bad your photo's are next to their's? Well DON'T ever worry what everone else does! The good thing with art and photography is that its about what you like and what inspires you and you alone!

Ok you may want to know how to create what the pro's have done re lighting etc! but what you need to do first is understand your camera settings and equipment.
If your lucky and have more cash than understanding, then you have a hard climb to get to grips with the camera.
But if you just have a cheap kit then you have time to learn all you can from it before desiding to take the leap and trade up to better kit later on.

I started with a Pentax lx that my grandfather let me use when I was 14. I learnt things back then just by messing about with lenses and settings but as it was film I had to wait a week to see the results. By the time I got the films back I  had forgoten what I had done in each situation. Now with instant viewing on the digital screens you can learn very fast.

Now With a Nikon D3 and some top glass and kit, I know what I will get when I press the shutter! well most of the time. With weddings, corperate and business events under my belt along with portrates and some glamour work, I now know that anyone, well almost anyone can learn the skills to get what they want from a camera! If you like what you see and are happy with it, then bloody great! This  is very important and even these days Im not always happy but Im a perfectionist like me dear dad and keep going untill I like what I see. You will always get knocked by others but who are they!!

If you are not taking photos to sell or make a living from, then be happy with what you can get and enjoy them on your wall. If however you want it to be a career!! then you have to have some natural ability I would say. It will help you so much if its within you but you can learn alot and spend years taking pictures and pick up tips along the way, but one day a snotty nosed young guy or girl will borrow your camera for the first time and take stunning photos and would never have done it before. Thats the natural side I believe. If you are never happy with what you turn out! then my guess is your probably good but some need direction.

Just enjoy the art for what it is. "Light and speed" simple hay!

So if your new and have never used an SLR before ( single lens reflex ) be it  film or digital! what should you do for a starting point?

Well the truth is money! it does depend on what you can afford or what sort of photography you are thinking of doing! concider these.

1, Is it just for fun?

2, would you do the odd occastion for friends and family?

3, would you like to earn money for your work be it weddings, corporate, events etc.

Ok so 3 very simple basic thoughts here.

For number 1, no need for an SLR as there are some very good compacts and bridge cameras out now that give good quality results most if not all of the time. I find that some have the flash to close to the lens so red eye can be a pain in the butt..

As for 2, There are lots in this range but the price can vary from £400 to £600 to get you in the market but you will need other equipment such as battries, external flash maybe and extra lenses. Nikon and Canon fit this bracket closely followed by some great Panasonic brands and other companies now coming to play the market.

The last in this basic write up could cost you a tidy sum, it depends on how quick you can learn or hope to gain work but I wouldnt go down this road untill you know your camera inside out and backwards. If you can adjust your camera mid flow without taking your eye off the subject through the view finder, then your chuffin good! You could buy a second hand good Canon or even the D3, now the D3X and D3S our out the D3 is coming down in price. Not cheep but so very very good but then the glass for them can be expensive, try eBay for second hand glass until you know what you really need! then save for new, you will not regret it.

Shop around online as there are some great bargans but dont get a head of yourself. If you want to try a camera, why not hire one first?

This is just a basic short guide that I hope will make you think before you buy. There are more indepth reviews of cameras of all types on the web. Good luck and above all just enjoy what you get out of it.  The follwing cameras are a mix and not intendeed to confuse you more! They are cropped and full size censors, something you will read a lot about!! do some home work and enjoy.

Great little camera that does almost all!!

Picture
This tiny camera that is lost in my big hands does so much! My friend Sara has just bought this Lumix for a two week trip to India! I had a play with it today and apart from being to small for me,  I use the D3, it really is a great buy! £249 gets you so much these days. HD 720p looks great and works well, the zoom is all you will need at 18x but you can ramp it up to 32x I think it was and more so with digital zoom. It takes the sd card and they are cheap these days, I put in my phones micro sd card and it gives it 2500 pictures at 10mp!! that was a 16gig card. If you have big hands! its not for you as you will keep touching buttons by mistake, apart from that I love this thing!! go get it.

Nikon launches the D7000, a D-SLR that offers exceptional image quality, reliability and performance packed into a durable and portable body.
“The exciting new D7000 is the ideal next camera for D-SLR owners who want to further indulge their passion for photography with a camera that boasts more advanced features providing creative power. It has a new image sensor, EXPEED 2, AF system and metering sensor to ensure great performance in a highly durable body. It has everything you need in your next SLR but in a size you wouldn’t expect.” said a Nikon spokesman. If you also want to film! then the new D7000 has this function.

WOW!  yes please. SB-700

Picture
The SB-700 is compatible with FX and DX cameras and its fast wireless control will make the flash attractive for a wide range of customers, including advanced photographers seeking to extend their Creative Lighting System. It can act as a master, controlling up to two groups of flashes and their light ratios, and can also act as a remote unit in a flash set up.

With its rotating head and built-in bounce card, the photographer can use the flash to direct the light and bounce it off ceilings or walls. The SB-700 also comes with the practical Nikon Diffusion Dome to soften the light and even the shadows of direct flash.

The flash has a mounting foot lock lever, through which the flash can be securely attached to the camera, preventing it from coming loose. There is also an optional weather-sealed mount available for outdoor photography. I so want and need one! I have used the fantastic SB-600 for the past three years and it is still going strong, even after being dropped many many times! super glue is so good !  You will never regret buying a Nikon flash, ever! I work alot in dark situations and nightclubs and I always get great results. This flash is not available just yet, the same as the new Nikon D7000. Both can be pre-ordered though but look around for the best price. Warehouse express is a good starting point! I will put up Amazons when I get it.
